Moving in Fairfield

Fairfield sits about 22 miles east of our Stamford warehouse, the far end of our usual Connecticut run. It's a town of about 61,000 with two universities, Fairfield and Sacred Heart, which gives the year two rushes: late May and the last ten days of August. Between those weeks it's family houses, from beach cottages to big colonials on Greenfield Hill.

  • 80 Furniture Pads on Every Truck
  • Building Paperwork Handled for You

University Move-Out Weeks

The last week of May and the end of August fill up fast in Fairfield, because the students and the beach renters all move at once. For those dates, book three weeks ahead. Four is better.

Small moves, like a dorm room to an apartment or a one-bedroom, run on our three-hour minimum with two movers. Have it packed and labelled before we knock and you'll finish inside the minimum. Whichever moving company Fairfield, CT families hire, get the estimate, the coverage and the date in writing. We'd say that even if it weren't us.

Types of Moving We Offer in Fairfield

Beach-Area Cottage and House Moves

A lot of the houses on Fairfield Beach Road were raised after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, so the front door now sits at the top of a long staircase. We plan for it with an extra mover and padded railings. Small cottages go fast. Raised ones take a little longer.

Greenfield Hill and Southport Homes

Greenfield Hill and Southport have bigger colonials on bigger lots, and some of the furniture has been in the family for generations. Antiques get double pads and ride upright against the truck wall. Southport's historic streets are narrow, so sometimes the truck parks around the corner and we carry a little farther.

Small Moves and Student Apartments

A one-bedroom, a dorm room, a handful of furniture. Two movers, one truck, a three-hour minimum at $179 an hour. We've moved plenty of grad students and young teachers around Black Rock Turnpike, and every one of them says the same thing afterwards: should have called sooner.

Long Distance Moves From Fairfield

As long distance movers, we put our own crews behind the wheel for East Coast runs to Boston, Washington, the Carolinas and Florida. You get a binding not-to-exceed estimate, a numbered inventory list at loading and the federal moving booklet before the truck leaves.

Moving Into Fairfield From the City

With three train stations, Fairfield gets a steady stream of families leaving Manhattan and Brooklyn. We sort out the city building's paperwork and loading window, stay on I-95 the whole way, and usually unload in Fairfield the same afternoon.

Moving into one of the newer apartment buildings near the Fairfield Metro station works like any building with a loading area. Book the elevator, send us the manager's contact a week ahead, and our office sends the certificate of insurance within one business day. On move day the truck is at the loading area by 7:40, and one of our 3 movers stays at the elevator so nothing waits in the hallway.

How Much Do Movers Cost in Fairfield?

Most Fairfield moves with us cost $550 to $5,500 in 2026. A small student move usually fits our three-hour minimum, about $540 to $720. A three-bedroom colonial runs $2,300 to $3,800. Long distance moves are priced by weight and distance. Every Fairfield estimate includes one travel hour from Stamford.

Getting Around Fairfield

We use I-95 exits 19 to 24 and the Post Road for most addresses, and Route 58 or Route 59 for the north end of town. The Merritt Parkway crosses Fairfield too, and like everywhere else in the state, box trucks aren't allowed on it. Three Metro-North stations, Fairfield, Fairfield Metro and Southport, mean busy morning parking near each, so we start early.

Booking late August in Fairfield is like trying to get a table at a Post Road pizza place on graduation night: everybody had the same idea. Last year we turned away more Fairfield calls than we took in the final ten days of August. The fix is simple. Call in June, take a weekday, and let the students have the weekend.

In our opinion, Fairfield families leaving the state should get their long distance estimate in May, not July. Good summer dates go early. So do the drivers.

What We See in Fairfield Homes

Fairfield is bigger and more spread out than most towns we work in. By the beach, many houses were raised after Sandy and now have long front stairs. Up on Greenfield Hill the lots and houses both grow. In between sit lots of 1950s capes and ranches, which move fast with three or four people.

Southport's old streets are narrow and lined with big trees. Often we park on a wider road and carry a bit farther, or we bring the 16-foot truck. Either way it's on the estimate, after the walk-through.

We've noticed Fairfield moves follow the school calendar more closely than anywhere else we work. Any flexibility at all? The second and third weeks of the month are easier to book, and the crews are fresher.

Fairfield Move Checklist

  • Book May and August dates at least three weeks out.
  • Measure outdoor stairs and landings on raised beach houses.
  • For long distance, get your estimate early and ask for binding not-to-exceed.
  • Keep the inventory sheet until every box is opened at the new house.
  • Ask for a certificate of insurance if you're moving into an apartment complex.

Office and Practice Moves in Fairfield

Along the Post Road and Black Rock Turnpike there are plenty of small offices, medical and dental practices and shops. We think those moves belong after hours or on a weekend, so patients and customers never see a truck. Every desk and file box is tagged to a floor plan before it's carried.

Most small office moves cost $350 to $600 per workstation. We protect floors and doorways at both locations and take the packing materials away when we leave.

Beach-side rentals add one more wrinkle. Many leases near the water run to a fixed date in late May or early September, and the landlord's cleaner is booked for the next morning. We plan those moves to finish by early afternoon, with the truck out of the way, so the cleaner and the next tenant aren't waiting on us.

Our crews also cross the New York line every week, so take a look at movers in Rye if your next home is in Westchester.

What Our Customers Say After the Truck Leaves

Every review at Stamford Prestige Movers gets read by Gina and by the crew lead on that job. If we moved you, a few honest lines help the next family in Fairfield County pick a mover with real information.

Our building at Harbor Point wanted a certificate of insurance and a dock time. Gina’s office sent both before I even asked. The crew had the two-bedroom in the truck by 11 and set up in North Stamford by 3.

Moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up on the Upper West Side is nobody’s idea of fun. They packed the kitchen the day before, carried everything down without a scratch on the banister and the price matched the estimate.

Fairfield Moving FAQs

Do you do small moves for Fairfield students?

Yes. Two movers and a truck take most dorm rooms, studios and one-bedrooms in under three hours, so you pay our three-hour minimum at $179 an hour. Pack and label everything first. In the last week of May and the end of August, book at least three weeks ahead.

Can you move a raised beach house with outdoor stairs?

Yes. We add an extra mover for the stairs, pad the railings and keep the treads covered if it rains. Heavy pieces like dressers and sofas go down one landing at a time. We look at the stairs on the walk-through, so the crew size and time are on the estimate.

How is a long distance move from Fairfield priced?

By the weight of your shipment and the distance, not by the hour. We weigh the truck on a certified scale and give a binding not-to-exceed estimate, so the price can come in lower but never higher than written. You also get a numbered inventory list and the federal booklet.

Do you charge travel time to Fairfield?

We charge one travel hour, the same as every Fairfield County town we serve, and it's shown on your written estimate. The drive from our Stamford warehouse is about 22 miles on I-95. There's no separate fuel charge on local moves, and no extra fee for stairs.

Can you store a student's things over the summer?

Yes. Students and families renting near the beach often need a few months between leases. We pick up from the apartment, store everything in a sealed wooden vault in our climate-controlled Stamford warehouse and deliver to the new place in late August. One vault holds about one room, at $150 to $195 a month.
