Moving in Wilton

Wilton is 14 miles up the Route 7 expressway from our warehouse: woods, stone walls and two-acre lots nearly everywhere you look. So moves here are house moves. Four bedrooms, a finished basement, a barn or a shed. Last fall we moved a family whose garage held a full woodshop, table saw and all. It took one extra truck and one very patient crew lead.

Steep Drives, Stone Walls and Ice

A lot of Wilton driveways climb away from the road, and some bend hard between two stone walls. Our trucks need width and solid ground. On the walk-through we check the drive and choose the truck that fits it.

December to March, we watch the forecast like hawks. If ice is coming, you'll hear from us the day before about a later start or a new date. A sliding truck helps nobody. Whichever moving company Wilton, CT families hire, get the estimate, the coverage and the date in writing. We'd say that even if it weren't us.

Types of Moving We Offer in Wilton

House Moves on Wooded Lots

Wilton keeps our house movers busier than our apartment crews. The usual job is a three or four-bedroom colonial or contemporary set back in the trees: four movers, one 26-foot truck, one long day. If the drive is too steep or tight, the 16-foot truck runs loads down to the big one at the road.

Basements, Barns and Workshops

Basements and outbuildings here fill up with tools, gym equipment and garden machines. Workbenches, tool chests and treadmills go on the right dollies with enough hands. Mowers and anything else with fuel get drained first. Gas cans stay behind.

One thing we leave in Wilton: the woodpile. Firewood can carry tree pests like the emerald ash borer, and Connecticut asks people not to haul it to a new place, so we don't load it. Propane tanks, paint and pool chemicals stay too. Give them to a neighbour or take them to the town's household hazardous waste day.

Moving and Storage While You Build

Plenty of Wilton families sell, rent for a few months, then build or renovate. That's where our vaults come in: about one room each, stored in a climate-controlled warehouse, so the furniture skips the damp garage and the roadside storage unit.

Long Distance Moves Out of Wilton

When families leave Wilton, it's usually for Boston, North Carolina or Florida. Our own crews drive those East Coast runs, and the price is a binding not-to-exceed estimate: a ceiling, written down, that can only come down if the load weighs less.

Downsizing From a Wilton House

Once the kids have gone, lots of Wilton parents trade the house for a condo in Norwalk, Stamford or the city. First we measure the new rooms. Then only what fits gets loaded, and the rest is sorted for a donation pickup or an estate sale before we leave.

Getting a Truck to Wilton

Route 7, the Danbury Road, is our main road through town. The Merritt Parkway cuts across the south end, but box trucks aren't allowed on it, so we come up the Route 7 expressway from Norwalk. Back roads near the Weir Farm historic park and the Ridgefield line are narrow and twisty, which is another reason the small truck earns its keep.

A Wilton driveway in February is basically a sledding hill with a mailbox at the bottom. In our experience the first warm afternoon after a storm is the worst time of all: the snow melts at 2 pm and freezes again by 5. If your drive faces north, we'd rather load in the morning and leave the afternoon for the road.

Honestly, our favourite Wilton moves start with a family that has already marked what stays in the basement. Sticky notes. Coloured tape. Anything. It turns a two-day job into one.

A Wilton Move Day, Hour by Hour

7:40, the truck pulls in (or the small one first, if the drive is steep). 8:00, the crew lead walks the house with you and the protection goes down: runners, banister pads, door frame covers. 8:30, loading starts with the basement and whatever lives in the barn.

Kitchen and bedrooms go on around noon, beds taken apart with the bolts bagged and taped to each frame. Most four-bedroom Wilton houses are loaded by 2:00 or 3:00. Staying in Fairfield County? We deliver that afternoon. Going farther, the truck is sealed overnight and unloaded the next morning.

It's a long day. We think it's worth eating lunch somewhere other than a bare kitchen counter, so plan on being out for an hour around noon.

Wilton Moving Checklist

  • Drain fuel from mowers, snow blowers and generators; we can't carry it.
  • Mark what stays in the basement and barn with tape before the walk-through.
  • Check the driveway for low branches and soft spots after rain.
  • Ask about our 16-foot truck if you've had trouble with delivery trucks before.
  • Watch the forecast in winter; we'll call if ice changes the plan.

Moving Into Wilton

Families moving into Wilton usually come from Stamford, Norwalk or the city, after more land and quieter roads. The new house is almost always bigger, so the move goes quickly and the unpacking drags. We can come back the next day to unpack the kitchen and make the beds.

Coming from a city apartment? We deal with the building's certificate of insurance and loading time, then head up I-95 and the Route 7 expressway. With three movers, most two-bedroom city moves to Wilton cost $2,500 to $4,100.

Wilton has no downtown towers and no loading docks, so the paperwork is light here. What matters instead is the school bus. We've learned to ask what time the bus comes up your road, because a 26-foot truck parked at the end of a narrow lane at 3:10 pm makes no friends. We'll tuck the truck into the drive or start early enough to be clear before it arrives.

Heading toward the shore, we also cover movers in Westport.

Our building at Harbor Point wanted a certificate of insurance and a dock time. Gina’s office sent both before I even asked. The crew had the two-bedroom in the truck by 11 and set up in North Stamford by 3.

Moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up on the Upper West Side is nobody’s idea of fun. They packed the kitchen the day before, carried everything down without a scratch on the banister and the price matched the estimate.

Wilton Moving FAQs

What if our driveway is too steep for a moving truck?

Then we use our 16-foot truck as a shuttle. It carries loads between the house and the 26-foot truck parked at the road. A shuttle usually adds two to three hours with two extra movers. We check your driveway on the walk-through and put any shuttle time on the written estimate.

Do you move workshop tools and gym equipment?

Yes. Tool chests, workbenches, table saws on bases, treadmills and weight sets all move every week. Heavy machines need a few hours' notice so we bring an appliance dolly and enough people. Drain fuel from mowers and generators before moving day; we can't carry gasoline.

Can you store our furniture while we build a house in Wilton?

Yes. We load your furniture into wooden vaults, one room per vault, and store them in our climate-controlled Stamford warehouse. They come out sealed when the new house is ready. The first month is free when we do the move in and out, and later months run $150 to $195 per vault.

Do you move people out of Wilton in winter?

Yes, all year. Winter moves are often easier to book and slightly quieter on the roads. We watch the forecast, salt our ramp and walkways, and call the day before if ice or a nor'easter is coming. If the driveway isn't safe for the big truck, we bring the small one.

How long does a Wilton house move take?

Most three or four-bedroom Wilton houses take one full day with four movers, if everything is packed. Full basements, barns or a steep driveway that needs our shuttle truck can add a few hours or a second day. We look at all of it on the walk-through and write the time into your estimate.
