Moving in Port Chester

Port Chester is a tight village of about 31,000 people, nine miles from our Stamford warehouse and just across the Byram River from Greenwich. Most of what we move here is apartments and two-family houses, and a lot of them are second or third-floor walk-ups. Last year we did more small moves in Port Chester than in any other Westchester town.

Walk-Ups and Street Parking

Plenty of Port Chester apartments sit upstairs in older two and three-family houses: narrow stairs, no elevator. Tell us the floor at both ends. It decides how many movers we send.

Parking near Main Street and Westchester Avenue is tight. We look at the block ahead of time and, where the village asks for one, help you set up a spot for the truck.

Types of Moving We Offer in Port Chester

Apartment Movers for Walk-Ups

Second and third-floor apartments, narrow stairs. Two or three movers, padded banisters and a stair-climbing dolly. Most one and two-bedroom moves are done in three to five hours, and taking beds apart and putting them back together costs nothing extra.

Small Moves and Single Items

A couch, a few boxes and a bed. Our three-hour minimum with two movers is $537, and small moves usually fit inside it. If it's really just one item, call and we'll tell you straight whether it's worth the minimum.

A third-floor walk-up is a StairMaster with a couch on it, and the couch always wins if you rush. We've learned to send the crew size for the stairs, not the square feet. A one-bedroom on the third floor gets three movers, the same as a two-bedroom on the ground floor, because the carry is what takes the time.

Two-Family House Moves

A whole two-family house, or both units at once for a landlord. We empty the upstairs first so the downstairs tenant isn't stuck behind a truck all day, and the shared hallway stays padded the whole time.

Waterfront Rental Moves

The newer buildings along the river have elevators and loading rules. Our office sends the certificate of insurance to management within one business day and books the elevator for you.

Moves From Port Chester to Connecticut

Greenwich is a short walk over the river and Stamford a fifteen-minute drive, so a lot of our Port Chester customers end up moving east. With us it's still an hourly move. The interstate forms are our office's job, not yours.

How Much Do Movers Cost in Port Chester?

Most Port Chester moves with us cost $540 to $3,000 in 2026. A studio or small move usually fits our three-hour minimum of about $540. A two-bedroom walk-up runs $900 to $1,600. A full two-family house costs about $2,000 to $3,000. Estimates include one travel hour from Stamford.

Getting Around Port Chester

The village sits right where I-95 and I-287 meet, so our trucks are on local streets minutes after leaving the highway. US 1 runs straight through downtown as Main Street and the Boston Post Road, and it gets crowded, especially around the Capitol Theatre on show nights. When we can, we're done loading downtown by 4 pm.

A move from Port Chester to Greenwich or Stamford crosses the state line. It's still a short hourly move with us, but you'll get a bill of lading and the federal moving booklet, and our office handles both.

Port Chester also has a lot of moves that happen in a hurry: a lease that ends mid-month, a landlord selling the building, a new job across the state line. We keep space in the schedule most weeks for short-notice small moves. Call by noon and we can often confirm a crew for later in the week, with the price written down before we come.

How We Run a Port Chester Walk-Up Move

Walk-ups get three movers with three jobs. One wraps and stages in the apartment. One carries. One loads the truck, so nobody ever tries to pass on a landing with a dresser between them. Dressers go down empty or with only clothes inside, and the books come out first.

Beds come apart, and the hardware goes in a labelled bag taped to the frame. Each mattress goes into a mattress bag before it touches the stairwell. At the new place, beds go up first. Night one ends in a real bed.

Honestly, the biggest time saver on a walk-up is a box that closes. Overstuffed boxes split on the stairs. Fill them, tape them flat, keep them under 40 pounds.

Port Chester Move Checklist

  • Tell us the floor at both addresses and whether there is an elevator.
  • Keep boxes under 40 pounds; books go in small boxes.
  • Check the parking on your block a few days before.
  • Empty dressers of heavy items; clothes can stay in.
  • Let your landlord know the date and time, especially in shared hallways.

Storage Between Leases

Port Chester leases rarely line up to the day. If the new apartment opens a week or a month after the old one closes, your things can wait in our wooden vaults in a climate-controlled warehouse in Stamford. Each vault holds about one room and stays sealed until delivery.

Vaults run $150 to $195 a month each, and the first month costs nothing when we handle both moves. Delivery is booked like any other move, ideally with the same crew.

Thinking of a rental truck instead? We get it. But in our experience a two-bedroom Port Chester walk-up with friends takes most of a Saturday, and the rental, fuel, pizza and a scraped stairwell can come close to our three-hour minimum. Call us for the number first. If doing it yourself really is cheaper, we'll say so.

For an apartment, one or two vaults is usually plenty. We'll tell you which at the estimate.

Inland from here, our crews also work as movers in White Plains.

What Our Customers Say After the Truck Leaves

Every review at Stamford Prestige Movers gets read by Gina and by the crew lead on that job. If we moved you, a few honest lines help the next family in Fairfield County pick a mover with real information.

Our building at Harbor Point wanted a certificate of insurance and a dock time. Gina’s office sent both before I even asked. The crew had the two-bedroom in the truck by 11 and set up in North Stamford by 3.

Moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up on the Upper West Side is nobody’s idea of fun. They packed the kitchen the day before, carried everything down without a scratch on the banister and the price matched the estimate.

Port Chester Moving FAQs

How much is a small move in Port Chester?

Most small moves fit our three-hour minimum with two movers, $179 an hour, about $540 in total. That covers a studio, a dorm room or a few large pieces, with one travel hour already included. Bigger loads or a third-floor walk-up can push it past the minimum.

Can you move a third-floor walk-up?

Yes, every week. We send three movers instead of two for third floors, pad the banisters and use a stair dolly for dressers and appliances. Beds are taken apart and set back up. Tell us the floor at both addresses, because stairs on both ends add up quickly.

Do you move landlords' two-family houses?

Yes. We can move both units the same day or on separate days, load upstairs first so the downstairs stays usable, and give you one invoice. If a unit is sitting empty between tenants, we can store the furniture in our climate-controlled warehouse in Stamford until it's needed.

Do you need parking for the truck in Port Chester?

Yes, we need a spot within a short carry of your door. Streets near Main Street and Westchester Avenue fill early, so we check your block ahead of time and tell you if the village needs a permit. On narrow streets we sometimes send our 16-foot truck instead of the 26-foot one.

Do you move Port Chester apartments on weekends?

Yes. Saturdays run 7:30 am to 5:00 pm at the same hourly rates, and they book up first, so ask three weeks ahead. Some Port Chester buildings don't allow weekend moves at all, so check with your landlord or management office before you pick the date. Weekdays are easier to schedule.
