Art and Antique Moving From Stamford

Walk into almost any Fairfield County home and you'll find something nobody can replace: the oil painting above the fireplace, a grandfather clock, a marble-topped sideboard a great-aunt left behind. Those pieces never ride the way a sofa does. Paintings get glassine first, the smooth paper museums use because it won't cling to paint. Then foam corners, then a padded box or a custom wooden crate. We crated about 40 pieces last year, and every one arrived the way it left.

Stamford Prestige Movers provides fine art moving to Stamford and nearby Connecticut and New York towns, including New Canaan, Westport, Greenwich, Darien and Rye. Gina's rule: any piece worth more than $5,000 goes on a high-value inventory form before it leaves the wall. Write it down. A painting in transit is a bit like a cello on a flight: it gets its own seat, or it doesn't fly.

Types of Fine Art Moving

Art movers treat each kind of piece differently. These five turn up most often.

  • Paintings and Framed Art

Glassine against the paint, foam on the corners, carried upright on an art cart. Large canvases go in padded boxes cut to their size.

  • Custom Crating

A wooden crate built for one piece only: a marble top, a glass table, a sculpture, a tall mirror. Expect a day or two to build it.

  • Antique Furniture

Old veneer chips if you look at it wrong, and old joints work loose. Antique movers only take apart what was made to come apart, and pad the rest whole.

  • Sculpture and Objects

Bronzes, ceramics and stone go in foam-lined boxes or crates; the heavy ones get strapped to a dolly of their own.

  • Collector Moves

Collections moved between homes, storage and framers, with a condition list we photograph at pickup and again at delivery.

Fine Art Moving Costs

  • One painting, wrapped and boxed: $75 to $250
  • One custom wooden crate: $350 to $1,200
  • Antique furniture: moves with the house, hourly
  • Art storage with climate control: from $150 a month

We quote every art move after seeing the pieces, in person or in photos.

What Every Art Move Includes

  • Glassine and foam corners for every canvas
  • Art carts so pieces travel upright
  • Crates built to size, when a piece needs one
  • A condition list with photos, made at pickup
  • A high-value inventory form, filled in with you
  • Full value protection if you ask for it

How Much Do Fine Art Movers Cost?

Fine art movers typically charge $75 to $250 to wrap and box one framed painting, and $350 to $1,200 to build a custom wooden crate. Antique furniture travels with the rest of the house at our hourly rate. Size, weight and value push the price up. So does a piece that's hard to get at.

How We Protect Art on the Truck

  • Upright, never flat. Framed art stands on its edge on an A-frame cart.
  • Glassine on paint, plastic never. Plastic holds moisture and can stick.
  • Strapped to the truck wall. Nothing leans on a canvas. Ever.
  • Last on, first off. The art loads at the very end and leaves the truck before any furniture.

We've seen a painting wrapped straight in stretch film and left in a hot truck. The film fogged, the varnish softened, and the canvas picked up a pattern nobody paid for. On our trucks, stretch wrap never touches a painted surface. Your couch has seen worse; your painting shouldn't.

Storing Art Between Homes

Art wants a steady room. According to the National Park Service, museums aim for roughly 40 to 55% relative humidity and a temperature that barely moves. Our climate-controlled storage holds steady all year, and crated pieces never sit on the floor. Moving the whole house? Add packing and unpacking and the china gets the same care as the canvases.

What Our Customers Say After the Truck Leaves

Every review at Stamford Prestige Movers gets read by Gina and by the crew lead on that job. If we moved you, a few honest lines help the next family in Fairfield County pick a mover with real information.

Our building at Harbor Point wanted a certificate of insurance and a dock time. Gina’s office sent both before I even asked. The crew had the two-bedroom in the truck by 11 and set up in North Stamford by 3.

Moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up on the Upper West Side is nobody’s idea of fun. They packed the kitchen the day before, carried everything down without a scratch on the banister and the price matched the estimate.

We stored the whole house in their vaults for seven weeks between closings. Everything came back dry and exactly as it went in, including my grandmother’s piano.

Fine Art Moving FAQs

Do I need a custom crate for my painting?

Most framed paintings ride safely in glassine, foam corners and a padded box. Crates make sense for big canvases, anything with glass, marble or stone, truly valuable pieces and long runs. During the walk-through we'll tell you which items need one and why, and each crate's price is listed on the estimate.

Is my art covered during the move?

Free released value coverage pays just 60 cents per pound per item. That won't touch a painting. Ask us for full value protection, and put the valuable pieces on a high-value inventory form. Own a serious collection? Read your fine art insurance policy too, since many of them cover pieces while they're in transit.

Can you move art to a framer or a gallery?

Yes. We carry single pieces and small collections between homes, framers, galleries and storage, priced per piece or by the hour. Each one is wrapped and photographed at pickup, then checked against the condition list at delivery. Tell us the opening hours at both ends. The crew will arrive inside them.

Can you move antiques with the rest of the house?

Yes. Antiques travel the same day as the rest of your home, with the same crew, extra pads and slower hands. We only take apart what was built to come apart, like bed rails and table leaves. Everything else gets wrapped whole, so old joints never take the strain. Slow is the point.
