Moving in New Canaan

New Canaan is nine miles up Route 123 from our warehouse, and it's the one town where we ask about the glass before we ask about the bedrooms. The mid-century houses are the famous ones, the Harvard Five and Philip Johnson's Glass House among them, but plenty of newer homes borrow the look: window walls, floating stairs, nowhere to lean anything.

Why Stamford Picks Stamford Prestige Movers

  • 80 Furniture Pads on Every Truck
  • Building Paperwork Handled for You
  • Binding Not-to-Exceed Long Distance Prices
  • Climate-Controlled Vault Storage
  • Full Value Protection on Request

Glass Walls and Designer Furniture

A modern house looks simple to move until you realise there's no wall to rest a mattress against. We bring extra floor runners, corner guards for glass edges, and a crew lead who has carried a credenza past a window wall before.

Designer chairs, stone tables and light fixtures come apart in their own particular ways. Leave the manuals out, or tell us the maker. We'll take them apart the way they were built to come apart.

Types of Moving We Offer in New Canaan

Mid-Century Modern House Moves

Flat roofs, window walls and furniture that's often worth more than the car in the garage. Glass tabletops get cardboard corners and stretch wrap, stone tops get crated, and a spotter walks beside every carry that passes a window. It's slower. Here, slow is the point.

Fine Art and Antique Moving

So many New Canaan houses hold real collections that we work as fine art movers here about as often as house movers. A painting gets glassine first, the smooth paper that won't stick to paint, then a custom crate or a padded art carton. Antiques ride upright, double-padded and strapped to the truck wall.

Large Colonial and Farmhouse Moves

Lots here often run one to four acres, with a private drive long enough to need a mailbox at each end. Four to six movers. Sometimes two trucks. A full day. Barns and sheds stacked with garden tools usually take longer than the house itself, so we walk those as well.

Downtown Condos and Townhouses

As local movers, we see a steady stream of empty nesters heading to Elm Street or Main Street, usually from eight rooms down to four. In our experience the hard part isn't the carrying. It's deciding, so we measure the new place with you and plan which pieces fit before anything is loaded.

Moving Out of New Canaan for Good

Some of our New Canaan customers are leaving after thirty years: for a smaller place, for Manhattan, for Florida. We help sort what goes, what gets sold and what goes to the kids, then pack and move the rest. On long distance runs, our own crews drive the truck.

How Much Do Movers Cost in New Canaan?

Most New Canaan moves with us cost $2,000 to $8,000 in 2026. A downtown condo is usually $1,200 to $2,000. A four-bedroom house with art crating and packing runs $5,000 to $8,000. Each estimate includes one travel hour from Stamford and comes after a walk-through of the house.

Roads Into New Canaan

New Canaan has no interstate. Our trucks come up Route 123 or Route 106 from Stamford and Darien, or Route 124. The Merritt Parkway crosses the south of town but bans box trucks, so a few addresses near it need a longer way around. Narrow back roads with stone walls and low branches are common, and we send the 16-foot truck when the big one won't fit.

Carrying a glass table through a New Canaan modern is like walking a full tray of drinks through a crowded gallery opening at the Silvermine Arts Center: nobody runs, and somebody calls out every corner. We've done it often enough that the routine never changes. Measure the pane, pad the frame, carry it on edge, and give one person no job except watching the glass.

Winter counts here. Long drives ice over, and we'd honestly rather move you a day late than slide a truck into a stone wall. If snow is in the forecast, we call the day before and settle on a plan together.

Last winter we pushed four New Canaan moves by a day for ice on the drive, and not one family minded once they saw the hill. A 26-foot truck weighs about 26,000 pounds loaded. On a frozen gravel slope, that's not a vehicle you steer, it's one you hope about. We'll always offer the next clear morning first, at the same price, written down.

How We Plan a New Canaan House Move

No New Canaan house gets a price until someone has walked it. Houses get an in-person visit; condos can do a video call. We look at the drive, the doors, the stairs, the glass and the collections, and the written estimate follows within one business day.

When a house has serious art or design furniture, the person who did the walk-through runs moving day. Nobody on the crew sees the Eames chair or the stone dining table for the first time at 8 am.

We map the house too. Every room gets a number on a floor plan, and every box and piece wears a matching tag, which is exactly how we run office moves and works just as well when the new house is laid out nothing like the old one. Simple. It works.

Getting Ready for the Packers

  • List anything over $100 a pound for the high-value inventory: jewellery, silver, art, collectibles.
  • Set aside what you're taking yourself: papers, passports, medicine, small valuables.
  • Photograph the back of the TV before unplugging, so the set-up goes quickly.
  • Leave assembly manuals out for designer furniture and light fixtures.
  • Tell us about outbuildings, pool houses and barns, so they're on the estimate.

Storage While You Renovate

Renovating a mid-century house takes a while, and a lot of New Canaan buyers do it before they move in. Meanwhile your things sit in our wooden vaults, about one room each, in a climate-controlled warehouse in Stamford. Art waits in its crates, and wood furniture stays out of August heat and February cold.

House done? Pick the date. We bring the vaults back and unpack into the rooms you point at, and the first month of storage is free when we handle both moves.

Further north up Route 7, we cover the same ground for movers in Wilton.

What Our Customers Say After the Truck Leaves

Every review at Stamford Prestige Movers gets read by Gina and by the crew lead on that job. If we moved you, a few honest lines help the next family in Fairfield County pick a mover with real information.

Our building at Harbor Point wanted a certificate of insurance and a dock time. Gina’s office sent both before I even asked. The crew had the two-bedroom in the truck by 11 and set up in North Stamford by 3.

Moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up on the Upper West Side is nobody’s idea of fun. They packed the kitchen the day before, carried everything down without a scratch on the banister and the price matched the estimate.

New Canaan Moving FAQs

Can you move a modern house with glass walls?

Yes. We protect every glass edge with corner guards, lay runners on stone and wood floors, and assign a spotter to watch the window walls during carries. Glass and stone tabletops get cardboard corners or a custom crate. Tell us about these houses at the estimate, because they need more time and more people.

Do you crate paintings and sculpture in New Canaan?

Yes. Most framed art goes in padded art cartons; valuable or fragile pieces get a custom wooden crate built to size. Paintings are wrapped in glassine first, so nothing sticks to the paint. If a piece needs climate-controlled storage, it goes to our Stamford warehouse in its crate.

How do you handle long private driveways?

We check every driveway at the walk-through: its width, the turns, overhanging branches and how soft the ground is. If our 26-foot truck can't reach the house safely, our 16-foot truck shuttles loads from the road. Any shuttle time is written on the estimate before you book.

Is the train a problem for moving downtown?

Not really, but we plan around it. Elm Street and Main Street get busy at train times and on Saturdays. We aim to park and start before 8 am, and we ask condo buildings in advance about loading rules. For most downtown moves, a weekday morning is the smoothest slot.

Do you move people out of New Canaan to Florida?

Yes. Our own crews drive East Coast long distance moves, Florida included. You get a binding not-to-exceed estimate, so the final price can come in lower than written but never higher, plus a numbered inventory list and the federal moving booklet. A three-bedroom house to Florida usually costs $8,500 to $14,000.
